`Traffic allowed amid shooting stones at Maroog, Panthiyal’

BANIHAL, Feb 12: Vehicular movement Tuesday restored on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway after having remained blocked for seven consecutive days due to shooting stones, landslides and avalanches triggered by incessant rains and snowfall in Ramban-Banihal and Banihal-Qazigund areas.
More than one thousand stranded vehicles including passenger vehicles (LMVs), petroleum, kerosene, LPG tankers and other trucks laden with essential commodities were allowed to move towards Kashmir valley this afternoon after clearance of landslide debris from NH 44.
Sources said that the road was made motorable for one-way traffic at the affected locations like Marog, Panthiyal, Anokhifall and Digdol. He further added that the traffic was allowed to move forward despite falling of shooting stones from hillocks at Maroog and Panthiyal.
270 kms long Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was blocked on the intervening night of February 5 and 6 when snowfall and incessant rains triggered a number of avalanches in Qazigund-Banihal sector besides more than one dozen landslides in Banihal-Ramban sector. On same night an avalanche hit north portal of Jawahar tunnel and blocked its both tubes.
Blockade of Jammu-Srinagar National Highway for past seven days created a shortage of essential commodities including LPG and kerosene in Banihal area also.
