SRINAGAR, Aug 5: Train service has been resumed on Badgam-Srinagar to Banihal in Jammu region via south Kashmir after remaining suspended yesterday, while no train will operate in north Kashmir for security reasons.
“We have resumed normal train service on Badgam-Srinagar in the central Kashmir to Anantnag-Qazigund in south to Banihal in Jammu region,” a senior railway official said this morning.
He said train service on this route was suspended for security reasons yesterday.
However, he said, today trains will not chug on Badgam in central Kashmir to Baramulla in north for security reasons. Police said three Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) were killed at Amargrah, Sopore, in Baramulla district early this morning.
“We have taken the decision to suspend train service today in north Kashmir after receiving an advisory from the administration and police for security reasons,” he said.
Railway property has suffered massive damage in the past during protests in the valley, where the train services remained suspended for about six months during summer unrest last year.
However, people shuttling daily between north to south Kashmir via Srinagar or vice versa prefer train service which is being considered most dependable, cheap and safe mode of transport in the Kashmir valley, where frequent traffic jam is a daily routine.
