Demonstrators clash with security men; scores injured

SRINAGAR, Apr 17: Scores of students were injured today in clashes with police at several places when they took out protest rallies in solidarity with students of Pulwama College who were allegedly assaulted by security forces on Saturday.
Several cops including a police officer were also injured in these clashes. Several students were admitted in the hospital after they were injured in day long clashes.
These clashes occurred at almost all the colleges including SP College, AS College, Baramulla, and Sopore, Pulwama, Shopian, Handwara, Kulgam, Ganderbal and other areas. Clashes erupted between the students and police.
A large number of students from SP College boycotted their classes and held a protest rally from SP College towards Lal Chowk. When the protesting students reached outside the college, large number of policemen stopped them and did not allow them to proceed.
The students pelted stones and the police fired smoke shells to disperse them. The clashes continued for more than an hour. During the clashes several students and policemen including SHO Kothibagh got injured in these clashes. The female students of M A Road also took to the streets and held protest demonstration against the Pulwama incident. The female students assembled outside the college and blocked the traffic on MA Road.
The shopkeepers around SP College closed their shops for some time till the normalcy returned in the area. Some female students also fainted due to tear-gas shelling in the area. Reports said that clashes broke out between students and police in Baramulla town of north Kashmir after students took out a protest march against the beating of students at Degree College Pulwama last weekend.
A large contingent of police deployed in the town did not allow the protesting students to proceed which resulted in clashes between police and students. The protesting students were pushed towards the college premises. Police lobbed scores of smoke shells inside the premises of the college to disperse the students. The students pelted stones and clashes continued for more than hour.
The students of Government Degree College Ganderbal today boycotted their classes and staged protests inside the college premises. Chanting slogans against alleged highhandedness of security forces against the students of Degree College Pulwama, students of Government Degree College Bandipora also staged protests. Reports said that the students, including girls, assembled in the lawns of GDC Bandipora and raised slogans against the government and security forces.
Clashes erupted in Pulwama after students staged. Reports said that security forces resorted to teargas shelling to disperse the student protesters, triggering clashes. The protesting students pelted stones triggering clashes. All shops and other business establishments remained closed while traffic remained off the roads
Students also held protest in Sopore town of north Kashmir against the Pulwama incident.
The students of Degree College Sopore staged protests. The police deployed there resorted to smoke shelling and baton-charge to disperse the protesting students. During the clashes several students got injured. Clashes also triggered shutdown in the area.
Several students were injured in Shopian after students of GDC Shopian and Higher Secondary School Shopian came out to protest in solidarity with the students of GDC Pulwama. The police force used heavy tear smoke shells and pepper gas to disperse the students in Shopian in which ten students were injured.
Clashes between students and forces also erupted in Kulgam when students tried to take out a procession march. However peaceful protests were held at GDC Bijbehara in solidarity with the Pulwama students. Reports said that some female students were injured at GDC Kulgam after security forces and police fired tear smoke shells inside GDC Kulgam. Reportedly, one teacher and several students were also injured inside the campus in forces action.
At Baramulla, Police and paramilitary forces used heavy tear gas shelling and lathi charge against the students of Baramulla Degree College who were protesting against the Pulwama college incident. Reports said that students of Boys Degree College Baramulla came out on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road and staged a protest demonstration.
Students were protesting on the highway when Police arrived and fired tear shells and lathi charged students inside college premises. Students of Degree College Handwara also staged a protest demonstration against the Pulwama College incident.
