5 killed, 9 injured in heavy rains, flash floods in Jammu

JAMMU, Aug 5: Flash floods and heavy rains triggering landslides and incidents of house collapse on Saturday claimed five lives including three women while nine persons sustained injuries in related incidents in different parts of Jammu region.
Several inter-district roads in the state were blocked in view of the landslides triggered by the downpour while a DMU train got stranded for over an hour due to landslide on Jammu-Udhampur track.
In Udhampur district, a woman and her two children were buried alive and five others sustained injuries when their house collapsed due to heavy rains in Barmeen village. In another incident, two women were washed away in flash floods triggered by the heavy showers in Kathua district.
In Udhampur tragedy, the deceased were identified Nisha Devi, 45, and her sons Sahil Singh, 11 and Sanjay Singh,7, all residents of Sala Morh in the Barmeen area of Ramnagar tehsil of the district Udhampur.
Five members of the family suffered injuries in the incident. Among the injured were Rajinder Singh, Sharda Devi, Asha Devi and Shvali Devi. They were admitted to the district hospital.
In yet another incident, two women washed away in flashfloods triggered by heavy rains in Kathua district, they said. Their bodies have been fished out.
In Rajouri district, four persons were injured when a house caved in due to intermittent rains at Siot village. The seriously injured Ashwani Kumar, 32, son of Dev Raj and his grandmother Taro Devi, 72, were shifted to sub-district hospital Sunderbani.
Reports said that the incident occurred when Ashwani and her grandmother were sitting inside their house, all of sudden a portion of the wall of their house collapsed.
Several inter-district roads too remained blocked for vehicular traffic in view of landslides triggered by heavy downpours, which also caused flooding of Chenab, Ujh, Basantar and Tawi rivers.
In the meanwhile a DMU train today got stranded for over an hour due to landslides on Jammu-Udhampur track, officials said.
The diesel multiple unit on its way from Udhampur to Jammu was stranded due to landslide near Ramnagar area, they said.
The landslide debris was cleared after which the DMU left for its destination and rail traffic plied smoothly on the track, they said.
