J&K Panchayat polls deferred over security threat issue

SRINAGAR, Feb 18: The bypolls to Panchayats scheduled from March 5 in Jammu and Kashmir has been postponed due to security reasons, J&K Chief Electoral Officer Shailendra Kumar said on Tuesday.
By-election to over 12,500 Panchayat seats in Jammu and Kashmir was scheduled to be held in eight phases from March 5.
"The by-polls to Panchayats have been postponed for three weeks due to security reasons," Kumar told newspersons.
He said this step was taken after inputs given to him by the home department over security issues.
The eight-phase poll was earlier scheduled to be held from March 5 to March 20 on a party basis.
The polling was slated for March 5, March 7, March 9, March 12, March 14, March 16, March 18 and March 20.
It may be recalled that the first and second phase elections notifications have already been issued by the J&K CEO. The notification was issued by Kumar, who is election authority under J&K Panchayati Raj Rules, 1996, for Shangus and Hiller blocks in district Anantnag, Aloosa block in district Bandipora, Sangrama and Wagoora in Baramulla district, B K Pora, Rathsun and Budgam in district Budgam, Wakura in Ganderbal district, block Kulgam in Kulgam district, Nutnussa, Drugmulla, Magam, Ramhal and Tarthpora in Kupwara district, Awantipora and Kakapora (Partly) in district Pulwama and Chitragam in Shopian district of Kashmir division.
Another notification said that in Jammu division, the Panchayati by-elections will be held in Bhagwah, Kastigarh, Thatri, Doda (Ghat), Dali Udanpur, Gundana, Assar, Khellani, Bhaderwah and Bhalla blocks of Doda district, Surankote, Loran, Mandi, Nangali Sahib Sain Baba, Sathra, Lassana and Bufliaz (partially) in district Poonch, Block Gundi Dharam, Batote, Rajgarh, Sangaldan, Gandhri and Ramban in district Ramban, Arnas, Thuroo, Jij Bagli, Mahore, Gulabgarh and Chasana in district Reasi, Sewna, Chanunta, Ramnagar, Majalta and Khoon in district Udhampur.
