Asks NC to participate in democratic process

SRINAGAR, Feb 17: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State General Secretary, Ashok Kaul today said that his party would contest on vacant Panchayat seats in Jammu and Kashmir no matter how tough the competition may be.
Talking to media on the sidelines of a workers meeting here, Kaul also invited National Conference (NC) which he claimed is the largest political party of Jammu and Kashmir to participate in upcoming elections on vacant Panchayat seats.
He said NC should contest elections even as the party fielded proxy candidates during Panchayat and urban Local Body (ULB) elections in 2018.
Pertinently elections for 11,639 vacant posts of panch and sarpanch in gram panchayats in Jammu and Kashmir will be held from March 5, the Election Commission announced last week.
The exercise, to be held in eight phases from March 5 to 20, will be the first major political exercise in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of provisions of Article 370 and bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories in August last year.
“Our party will contest elections with full might, no matter how hard the competition would be, we will contest’ the way we have been doing over the years. NC should also participate in the process being largest regional party even as it fielded proxy candidates during Panchayat and urban Local Body (ULB) elections held in 2018,” Kaul said.
He said since the Union Territory administration has announced elections on many vacant seats, it is imperative for his and other parties to take part in democratic process.
BJP leader also said the meeting was convened to impress upon the party south Kashmir cadre to work hard to make party win in upcoming elections.
