Ambulances get stuck in messy traffic jams

ANANTNAG, Dec 15: Roadside parking of vehicles and setting up of stalls by the vendors are choking the major roads in this southern township leading to massive traffic jams. The concerned officials have bitterly failed to take action against the people responsible for creating mess on the roads.
The market places badly affected by the problem include the business hub, Lal Chowk, Mattan Chowk, Dangarpora, Mehandi Kadal, Cheeni Chowk, Achabal Adda, Reshi Bazar , Janglat Mandi, Court Road, General bus Stand and Sherbagh.
At these places, vehicles are parked haphazardly on both sides of the roads, narrowing the passage for vehicles plying on roads. Due to the wrong parking of vehicles messy traffic jams are witnessed on daily basis in almost all the market places of the town.
What furthers the mess on roads and footpaths is the setting up of stalls by vendors. Hundreds of vendors can be seen occupying the Medical College Road from Mehandi Kadal to Janglat Mandi obstructing the smooth movement of traffic. The occupation of footpaths by these vendors also agonizes the pedestrians, making it difficult for them to walk.
Many a time ambulances carrying patients get stuck in the messy traffic jams on the busy hospital road.
The mess on the roads leading to Maternity and Child (MCH) Hospital in Sherbagh locality is equally agonizing as the vendors from Mattan Chowk to hospital gate don’t leave an inch of space unoccupied.
“The mess on the roads of the town is such that it takes you more than half an hour in a vehicle to cover the distance of over one km from Janglat Mandi to Lal Chowk. Similarly from Cheeni Chowk to Mattan Chowk which is a walking distance of five minutes it takes you twenty to thirty minutes to cover the distance,” said a local trader, Gowhar Ahmad.
“It is the duty of traffic and other concerned officials to ensure smooth movement of traffic and clear the roads and footpaths from encroachments. But they are missing. Though a couple of traffic police men are seen regulating the traffic out the medical college gate in Janglat Mandi area and outside General bus stand but in rest of the town not a single traffic cop is seen,” said a local trader, Adil Ahmad.
“If you ask any vendor why he has occupied the road he clearly says that he pays for it,” Ahmad said.
“Every morning we inspect the major roads and remove the stalls set up the vendors. But once we move back to office they again come and encroach the roads. Now we have decided to constitute different teams to check the encroachments in different areas of the town,” an officer said.
He, however, said that the haphazard parking of vehicles on roads that adds to the mess is not their jurisdiction.
“Taking action against the people parking vehicles on roads is the job of traffic police. The mess will be cleared only if the traffic department extends cooperation to us” he said.
