SRINAGAR, Nov 21: After clearing stranded vehicles, fresh one-way traffic was today allowed to ply towards the border town of Gurez
Vehicle stranded in Gurez were on Wednesday allowed to move towards its district headquarter Bandipora following re-opening of roads after remaining closed for 13 days due to accumulation of several feet of snow.
Meanwhile, traffic was on Thursday plying on all roads leading to dozens of far flung and remote villages, including border towns of Machil, Keran and Karnah, in north Kashmir with some restrictions to avoid any accident. However, these areas could again be cut off from their respective headquarter of Kupwara as there is prediction of fresh spell of moderate to heavy snowfall in north Kashmir during the next 48 hours.
“On Thursday, one-way traffic was allowed to ply from Bandipora to Gurez,” an official of Police Control Room (PCR), Bandipora, told news agencies over the phone on Thursday.
He said fresh traffic was allowed on the road after all the vehicles which were stranded in Gurez, Neeru and adjoining areas from the last 13 days due to accumulation of several feet of snow were cleared on Wednesday. “Two-way traffic on the road will be allowed only after a green signal from the official deployed at various places between Bandipora and Gurez,” he added.
The Gurez-Bandipora road was closed on November 6 due to several feet of snow and slippery conditions. “There was more than five feet of snow at Razdan Pass, which was cleared,” he said.
The government has already approved a tunnel at Razdan pass to make it an all weather road.
Meanwhile, traffic was plying with some restriction on roads to dozens of far flung and remote villages, including border towns of Machil, Keran and Karnah, in north Kashmir district of Kupwara.
“Traffic on Kupwara-Machil road was allowed to ply from Machil to Kupwara in the morning and Kupwara to Machil in the afternoon,” an official of Police Control Room (PCR), Kupwara, said.
Similarly, he said traffic on Kupwara-Kernah and Kupwara-Keran roads were also plying with similar restrictions.
Traffic was suspended on roads leading to Keran, Karnah and other far flung areas in north Kashmir on November 15 following slippers road conditions and accumulation of snow. However, snow clearance operations on these roads were taken up on Sunday following improvement in the weather conditions and the roads were put through.
He said the roads leading to dozens of far flung and remote areas could again shut as there is a forecast of moderate to heavy snowfall in north Kashmir.
