The recent massacre at an elementary school in Connecticut has struck an emotional chord around the globe because most of the victims were innocent children, as young as five and six years old. It happened just one day before the 221st anniversary of the adoption of the Second Amendment to the US constitution, which guarantees citizens the right to bear arms. 20 school children and 6 teachers were killed who didn’t even get the time to realise what had struck them.
The shooting was an act performed by one Adam Lanza who suffered from mental illness. His relationship at home with his father had become sore and that’s why he decided to take out his madness and frustration on a group of innocent children and adults. This tragedy has understandably sparked a call by many well intentioned people to demand tighter gun laws in the US. But are the lax gun laws the real problem or is it also the mental illness?
The act could have been prevented if Adam Lanza would have been properly counseled. He should have been sent to a psychiatrist-properly treated and locked up. Problems at home should be dealt in the house only. They shouldn’t be left undealt with. We can’t just mourn about such incidents and forget it as if it never happened. In my humble opinion, stricter gun laws and proper counseling of mentally ill people are the only solutions to such problems.
