Heat wave sweeping Kashmir valley

SRINAGAR, July 29: With no let up in the heat wave sweeping the Kashmir Valley for the last one over a week, the parents have urged state government to re-announce the summer vacations after dozens of children fainted in schools due to scorching heat wave.
Pertinently, the schools opened last Monday after 10-days summer vacations. Now the parents are demanding that the government should announce vacations again so that the children have some respite from intense heat wave.
The Met office here said the maximum temperature recorded in Srinagar was 35.5 degrees Celsius today, above five degrees normal.
Due to non availability of proper accommodation and cooling facilities in both government and private run educational institutes, several children got fainted in various areas of Kashmir.
Even majority of the parents have not sent their children to schools to avoid the heat. The doctors have also advised children and age old people not to walk in the prevailing heat wave.
“The government without taking care about the prevailing heat wave announced to reopen the schools. Our children are getting fainted in schools. There is no facility in schools, where these children could properly read under the heat wave. It is better to announce the summer vacations again to save the children from further problems,” said a parent Mohammad Shafi.
Incidentally, temperature in Srinagar City was slightly higher than that recorded in the winter capital Jammu at 35.0 degrees Celsius.
The minimum temperature in the summer capital was at 35.5 degrees Celsius, which were several degrees above normal.
The residents of several parts of the Srinagar and the Valley have complained of acute shortage of drinking water and electricity. Several areas in the city were without electricity for many hours yesterday and today.
