SRINAGAR, July 20: People’s United Forum (PUF) an amalgam of Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Movement (JKPM) and Awami Ittihad party (AIP) today took out a protest rally here to seek action against Vikramaditya Singh for allegedly insulting July 13, 1931 martyrs recently.
Led by former legislator and AIP President, Er Rashid, the PUF supporters took out a protest rally from Regal Chowk to Press Enclave against Congress leader Vikramaditya Singh's remarks on 1931 Martyrs.
Chanting slogans against grandson of the erstwhile Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir, Maharaja Hari Singh, the protesters asked the Congress leader to apologise for what they termed character assassination of 1931 martyrs.
They also asked Vikaramditya Singh to muster courage to denounce the alleged crimes committed by his father and grandfather rather than indulging in character assassination of national heroes who laid down their lives against autocratic rule of Maharja Hari Singh.
Speaking on the occasion, Er Rashid, while condemning as shameful the remarks against 1931 martyrs, asked Vikramaditya Singh to “answer as to who legalized prostitution in Jammu and Kashmir”.
He also asked National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to explain their relations with Vikramaditya Singh and the forces praising Maharaja.
"They were not rapists and thieves. They raised their voice against your grandfather as they were fighting for truth", Rashid said, referring to the erstwhile Dogra Maharaja Hari Singh who was the grandfather of Vikramaditya Singh.
Rashid also alleged that Vikramaditya tried to be more communal after facing humiliating defeat in the recently concluded parliamentary elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
He said the two main regional parties including NMC and PDP extended their support to Singh who claimed to be the representative of secular forces. He also asked NC and PDP to apologise for extending their support to Vikramaditya Singh in elections.
“1931 martyrs fight with Maharaja was not based on communalism. They sacrificed their lives against his autocratic rule,” he added.
