Sajad Mufti is the cousin of former chief minister and PDP president, Mehbooba Mufti.
Officials said the militants fired upon the PSO of Mufti when he was standing guard outside the mosque in Baba Mohalla locality of the town, where Muftis live. He was identified as Farooq Ahmad of Khiram Bijbehara.
He was immediately evacuated to sub-district hospital Bijbehara where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
