Tragic road accidents

Non-seriousness of the govt continues to take heavy toll of innocent citizens

The series of accidents that have taken place during the past few days claiming several precious lives and injuries to many others have been unfortunate and tragic. More than the tragedies, it is sad that the state government has not even expressed its grief on the loss of lives of the commoners. Unfortunately, one after the after, the accidents have continued to take heavy toll of precious lives without the fault of the victims. Either it is the old story of driver having lost control over the vehicle and plunging down into the ravines or the over-loaded vehicles with passengers packed beyond their capacities. The checking of traffic violations and bringing to book the erring drivers has failed to have any effect on over-loading of unruly and rash driving by the operators. As a result of lax working of the law enforcing agencies, the rash and negligent drivers continue to have a field day without being accountable to anybody. The government also has failed miserably in augmenting the commuter services in the far flung and rural areas for the convenience of the commuters, who are forced to travel in over-crowded buses and mini-buses. The condition of the roads having not been repaired during the past few months are contributing to accidents in hilly areas. Some of the roads declared unfit for heavy vehicles and passengers are use posing dangers to the lives of innocent passengers. Even the assurances of the government to conduct a fresh survey for checking road worthiness of the vehicles and condition of the roads are yet to be fulfilled. Sadly, the people have been ignored and they have been left to fend for themselves.
