SRINAGAR, July 22: Strongly condemning the brutal killing of four innocent people in Gool area of Ramban district former chief interlocutor on Kashmir, Dilip Padgaonkar has said the killings is a heavy setback for peace process and urged New Delhi to bring the guilty to the book of law as soon as possible.
“What has happened in Gool Ramban is a big tragedy and against humanity. Whenever such incidents take place in the state it throws all the efforts for peace to the winds. Such incidents will take us nowhere and should be condemned by one and all as it is totally unacceptable,” Padgaonkar told a local news agency, KNS, over phone from New Delhi.
He said the killing of innocent villagers is a brutal act and is a slap on all the claims of democracy and secularity. “A thorough investigation should be held and the killers should be taught a lesson,” he demanded.
“All the citizens in a democratic country have the right to protest in a peaceful manner if their religious sentiments are hurt but the unarmed crowed was fired at. Now when this unfortunate incident has happened government should take concrete measure to punish the guilty without bias,” he added.
Meanwhile, Padgaonkar former colleague and interlocutor on Kashmir Professor Radha Kumar said, “I fail to understand that despite the rule that the lethal weapons will not be used during the protests, security forces use it again and again which is very unfortunate.”
“By killing unarmed civilians you are holding the state in limbo. That can only encourage violence, and anger,” she told KNS.
“Union Home Minister Shushil Kumar Shinde should take strong action against those who are involved in killing of innocent people so that such incidents do not occur in future. Enquiry committee which has been formed by home ministry should sincerely investigate the incident so that justice could be delivered,” Radha said.
Commenting on imposition of curfew she said, continuous curfew only aggravates the miseries of people and further alienates them. “The killing of innocent people will prove counter-productive in the way of any peace effort,” she warned.
