For a tobacco-free J&K

Kashmir Times. Dated: 7/20/2012 10:24:32 AM

Dear Editor,
Refer to today’s KT in which a news report says, ‘Omar for Tobacco free J&K’, where the CM has been quoted as explaining the perils of the deadly trend in the State. A few decades earlier, mounds of tobacco were seen in the famous markets in the J&K alongwith the prevalence of smoking the hubble-bubble or the hookah. With the availability of Cigarettes and other sundry items laden with the herb, the trend has assumed sinister proportions and the youth are hooked up.
It is usually seen that weaning away the population from its deadly effects is very difficult if not impossible, but might take tremendous efforts on the part of the people who are experts in this field. The side-effects including weak lungs and in many cases, dreaded disease like Cancer taking the individual in its hold are very well-known. Methods should be devised for effective programs and workshops alongwith the practical steps of counseling the people so that they leave this bad habit for ever which will benefit their immediate family and friends, besides bettering their overall health.
