4 militants, boy killed in 2 north Kashmir encounters: Officials

SRINAGAR, Mar 22: Four militants were killed in two different encounters in north Kashmir since last evening, while a 12-year old boy was killed.
Two militants were killed at Hajin in Bandipora diistrict. A boy was also killed there during exchange of fire. Two militants were killed at Kalantra in Sopore.
A shutdown was today observed in Sopore over the killing of the militants. Shops and other business establishments remained closed and transport was also off the roads.
Giving details, a police spokesman said that based on credible inputs about the presence of militants in Hajin area, a cordon and search operation was launched by police and security forces in the area.
As the searches were going on, the hiding militants fired on the search party.
"Initially the militants kept two civilians as hostages. However, police and security forces with the assistance of community members safely rescued one civilian, Abdul Hameed, a 60 year old man. Another civilian a 12-year old boy Aatif Mir was kept hostage till the end and despite repeated requests by community members and police for his release, he was killed by the militants and could not be rescued," the police spokesman said.
He added that then the militants fired on the security forces who engaged them in an encounter after the civilians in the adjoining areas were evacuated to safer places. In the ensuing encounter, two militants were killed and the bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter.
"From the incriminating material recovered at the site of encounter it is understood that the two killed militants were Pakistani nationals identified as Ali and Hubaib. As per the police records, both were affiliated with LeT," the spokesman said.
He said two militants were killed in an encounter at Kalantara Payeen in Baramulla. He added that one of the two killed militants was identified as Aamir Rasool of Sopore and from the incriminating material recovered at the site of encounter, it is understood that the other killed militant was a Pakistani national.
Reports said three security men including an officer were also injured in the incident.
Amid a shutdown in Sopore, large number of people joined the funeral of Aamir, reports said.
