JAMMU, Jan 19: Sensitisation workshop on Animal Rights and compassionate handling of man animal conflicts, for newly appointed Corporators of Jammu Municipal Corporation ‘Save Animals, Value Environment' was organised here today.
A sensitisation programme on animal rights for the Jammu Municipal Corporation councillors and the JMC staff, was organized in collaboration with and support of Mayor and Jammu Municipal Commissioner Pankaj Mangotra .
Gauri Maulekhi was the resource person who conducted this programme.
Gauri Maulekhi is Advisor to Minister for women and child welfare Maneka Gandhi and Member J&K Animal Birth Control Monitoring Committee Trainer on animal protection laws for law enforcement agencies. She is also Member, Management Committee, National Institute of Animal Welfare, MoEF&CC.
She talked about the successful management of dog population without killing or displacing dogs or hurting human interests. She spoke about the sustainable and scientific ABC programme which could only give desired results. “Quick fixes like mass butchering of stray dogs can land the city or state in trouble like it happens in Surat where culling of 80000 dogs gave drastic rise to rodent population and Plague disease broke out and killed thousands of people. So 70 percent of dogs need to be sterilized at any given point and control of Garbage disposal is very important for disease free city and town,” she said.
She also spoke about management of stray cattle and need for making dairies and other horse owners responsible for their byproduct in the form of useless cattle or equine so they do not leave them on the streets after milking or using them.
“Opening of more cattle and dog shelter was the responsibility of the state which needs to be promoted. The model on which Lucknow Cattle shelter, Kanha Upwan was running is self sustainable with more than 6000/ cows and people and tourists visit it as a tourist attraction,” she added. She suggested that a team from JMC could visit the cattle shelter and try and replicate it in Jammu.
Compassion for handicapped, injured or old animals was a duty of every human being, she said.
Many questions were raised by few corporators who either had a issue with dogs and their ever growing population.
The programme was attended by members of SAVE and animal lovers , Hemlata Karki, Vishal Khajuraia, Sunita Pandit , Professor Lalit Sen Sharma, Gurvinder kaur , Anamika , Sheikh Shakeel Ahmed, RTI activist Balvinder Singh and Paramjit Kaur.
