Army chief reviews security in Valley
Meets Governor, to visit forward posts on Tuesday
SRINAGAR, July 15: Amid increasing tension along the border with China in Ladakh and recent spurt in militancy-related incidents, Army chief General Bikram Singh on Monday reviewed security measures in Jammu and Kashmir.

According to a local news agency KNS, General Singh, who is on a two-day visit to the state, chaired a meeting at the 15 Corps headquarters at the Badamibagh Corps Headquarters here, where he was briefed by Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Sanjiv Chachra and the Corps Commander Lt Gen Gurmit Singh about the security and counter-infiltration measures in J&K, a Defence ministry spokesman based in Srinagar told KNS.

Singh received a detailed briefing about anti-infiltration measures, and applauded the role of soldiers in foiling the recent infiltration bid in Keran sector of Kupwara district, in which five militants were killed.

The recent developments along the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh region were also discussed.

Later, General Bikram Singh interacted with the GoCs of various counter-insurgency forces and Divisional Commanders of the Army. He also addressed the officers of the Chinar Corps which was relayed to officers present at 16 Corps (Jammu) and 14 Corps (Leh) through video conferencing, he said.

The Army Chief, he said, later called upon the state governor N N Vohra at Raj Bhawan here at 6 p.m.

During the meeting, the Governor and Chief of the Army Staff discussed various matters relating to internal and external security management, he said.

Before his return to New Delhi on Tuesday, the Chief of Army Staff is scheduled to visit forward areas along the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir and interact with troops deployed on the Line of Control there, the spokesman added.

Army Chief two-day visit assumes significance in wake of the recent infiltration bid in Kupwara and a number of militant attacks in the Kashmir valley recently, including the one on an Army convoy At Hyderpora in Srinagar on June 24 that left 8 soldier dead and around a dozen injured.
