Lucknow, Dec 12 (Agencies): As the counting of votes for five state assemblies neared end on Tuesday, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav took a jibe on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which lost power in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Mocking the saffron party, the SP chief said, "Ab ki bar, kho di sarkar (This time, they failed to form the government)."
After a long drawn see-saw battle, the Congress emerged as the single largest party in Madhya Pradesh, winning 114 out of 230 seats. The SP has extended support to the grand old party in the state after it fell short of a majority in the state by just two seats.
The announcement by SP chief Akhilesh Yadav came less than an hour after Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati made a similar offer to the Congress for government formation in the Hindi heartland state of MP.
Congress also secured big wins in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh and is set to form the governments in the two states.
The assembly elections were being seen as crucial for the BJP before the Lok Sabha elections in 2019. BJP was in power in three of states - Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan - where counting took place on Tuesday.
