SRINAGAR, Dec 8: Following a call by the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), traders and transporters on Saturday held peaceful protests here demanding end to human rights violations in Kashmir.
While umbrella body of trade unions Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industries (KCCI) took out a protest rally, transporters held sit-in protest at Pratap Park against the worst human rights violations in Kashmir.
Shouting slogans KCCI led by its President Sheikh Aashiq took out a protest march from residency Road to Press Enclave as a mark of protest against atrocities meted out to the people of Kashmir.
Members carrying placards in their hands reading “innocent killings have shaken the society”, “KCCI demands end to killings” and raising pro-justice slogans assembled at Press enclave and staged peaceful demonstrations to protest civilian killings.
They said the government of India should initiate a meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders to resolve the long pending dispute.
They also condemned use of pellets and bullets on civilian population saying situation in Kashmir seems no different than Palestine the way its population is being targeted by armed forces.
“We demand a meaningful dialogue between all the stakeholders including India, Pakistan and the people of Kashmir. Dialogue is the only way-out to end bloodshed in the valley,” said Sheikh Ashiq, KCCI President.
He also said that instead of choking space for peaceful protests and arresting traders, the government should allow them to give vent to their emotions through protests. We also want to resolve Kashmir by initiating a meaningful dialogue between all the stake holders,” he added.
Seeking resolution of seventy years pending Kashmir issue, the Transporters said Kashmir continues to suffer since 1947 and have lost over one lakh people during conflict.
They said the use of bullets, pellets and other lethal weapons have taken huge toll on the people of Kashmir since seventy years.
“We have gathered here on the JRL call, our demand is to end killing of innocent Kashmiri people and use of lethal weapons on civilians during protests,” said Kashmir Transporters Welfare Union (KTWU) President.
He said all transporters including Auto rickshaw union, Sumo Drivers Union, public transport operators and others participated in the protest as part of JRL’s human rights week.
