World Ozone Day

"Good Uncle: 16 September an important day…but why?"
"Dear, 16 September is the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer; it is commonly known as the World Ozone Day."
"But come how the Day?"
"Dear, depletion of the atmospheric ozone layer scientifically confirmed, the international community started protecting it. Accordingly, the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer was adopted and signed by 28 countries on 22 March 1985. Soon upon this in September 1987 was drafted The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. And then in 1994, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 16 September as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer or the World Ozone Day."
"But Uncle, what is this Ozone Layer…why important for us…and why the headache protecting it?"
"The Ozone Layer, also called Ozone Shield, is mainly found in the lower portion of the earth's stratosphere, from approximately 20 to 30 kilometres above; its thickness varies seasonally and geographically. It absorbs 97 to 99 percent of the sun's medium-frequency ultraviolet light, which otherwise would potentially damage exposed life forms near the surface. Unfortunately, it has been getting depleted by chemicals released by industry, mainly chlorofluorocarbons. Such concerns that threaten life on earth have and must lead to bans on such chemicals. Fortunately, the latest evidence is that Ozone Layer depletion has stopped or considerably slowed down."
"But how is the Day celebrated…what the activities?"
"Yes. Special events including talks and seminars are held in the Canadian city of Montreal - people from all over the world are expected to join. Worldwide, their educators all along guiding, children sing the Ozone Song in chorus at various special functions. All joy, they raise tall slogans too."
"Good Uncle, what slogans please…"
"O many indeed. Yes, some here: 'Earth without ozone is like a house without roof,' 'Ozone - Nature's sunscreen,' 'Preserve Ozone layer, it protects us,' 'Prevent skin cancer - Protect the ozone layer,' 'Earth is an Oh!!! zone, without ozone,' 'Get in the ZONE to save OZONE.'"
"Good Uncle, the activities good, the slogans good, but results any good expected?"
"O why not? Ozone Layer depletion has been slowing down, hope it will soon ultimately go."
"I believe not."
"O why not?"
"All round pollution - of canals, streams, rivulets, rivers, seas, oceans, cities, countries, atmosphere, O of entire Mother Earth - has been now long steadily going on. So many world days we have been observing for their protection - which means our own protection, our very survival. But what the results: Worse to bad…or bad to worse…or worse to worst? And, Great Uncle, a cover-up - of our going from good to bad…bad to worse…worse to worst - seems to me this observance of World Ozone Day, like of all other world days!"
