5 militants killed in 2 encounters in Keran

SRINAGAR, Sep 13: Police and security forces today said five militants were killed in two different encounters in north Kashmir. An encounter occurred in Keran sector, while the other at Arampora in Sopore.
Reports quoting officials said that three militants were killed in a gunfight along the Line of Control (LoC) in Keran area of Kupwara district.
Soldiers of 3 JAK Rifles manning the fence at Balbir post near Datgali in Keran intercepted a group of militants at around 10.40 AM today which resulted into a gunfight.
An army officer told media that the alert troops challenged the movement of a group of infiltrators triggering off a gunfight.
In the ensuing gunfight, three militants have been killed, he said, adding that the bodies of the militants are lying close to the LoC and are yet to be retrieved.
Two militants were killed in a gunfight at Arampora area of Sopore. An army officer told media that two militants were killed in the operation at Taliyan Mohalla area of Arampora.
A police official said in Checkipora area of Sheikhpora Sopore police and security forces jointly launched a search operation based on credible inputs about the presence of militants in the area.
“During the searches, militants fired on the search party. Initially civilians were evacuated from the encounter site to the safer areas before engaging with the militants in an encounter,” the official said adding that in the ensuing encounter, two militants were killed. Some arms, ammunition and incriminating material was recovered from the site of encounter.
The official said from the incriminating material recovered from the encounter site, the killed militants were identified as foreigners from Pakistan, Ali alias Athar and Zia-ur-Rehman. They were affiliated with militant outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad. “Ali was one of the important commanders of JeM and was active since 2014. He was mastermind of the Sopore IED blast in which four policemen were killed. Besides, both of them were involved in attacks on security force establishments,” police said.
Eyewitnesses told media two identity cards were recovered from the slain militants that revealed their address as Dardpora Kupwara. However, a police official said that investigation is being taken up to verify the authenticity of those two Aadhar cards.
