DUBAI, Sep 11: Former cricketers, Greg Chappell (Australia) and India's Mohammad Azharuddin, who too had scored centuries in their debut and last Tests have congratulated Aliaster Cook.
Cook, who, in his debut Test (against India at Nagpur in 2005) had scored 104 (not out) repeated the second inning ton (147 runs) in his farewell Test against India on Monday and joined the company of two other Australians (Reggie Duff and Bill Ponsford).
Azhar's last Test (99 of his career) was not pre-announced, whereas like Cook, Greg Chappell had announced his retirement before the final one. .
"That (scoring a century in his first and last Tests) is fantastic news. Alastair (Cook) has been one of the most consistent scorers of runs in the modern era and an ornament to the game", Chappell, speaking exclusively over telephone from Australia, where he was preparing to board a flight, said exclusively.
"I am delighted for he and his family that he was able to crown his career in such fine style", Chappell, who also coached Indian team, added.
"Don’t think any Indn Crkt fan wud begrudge Cooky a Ton n his last Test..only 5th n history which has crisp/elegant/touch artist @azharflicks also n list..thus the romance o Crkt is indeed terribly exclusive..it’s a batsman’s game remember..but bowlers win games..!!!", former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi has interestingly tweeted.
Alistair Cook now the only 2nd Test batsmen in Test history, after South African Bruce Mitchell, to register two 50+ scores in each innings of his debut and final Test match. (Thank you Mohandas Menon).
