2 militants killed in Langate encounter

Internet snapped, schools closed in Handwara

SRINAGAR, Sep 11: Police today said two militants were killed in an encounter with the security forces at Langate in Handwara last night.
Giving details a police spokesman said police and security forces launched a joint search operation based on inputs regarding the presence of militants at Galoora in Langate.
“During the searches, the militants fired on the search party, which was retaliated leading to an encounter. In the ensuing encounter, two militants were killed,” he said.
Arms and ammunition was also recovered from the site of encounter, he added. The slain militants were identified as Liyaqat, a resident of Harwan Sopore and 18 year old Furqan a resident of Langate area of Handwara.
The authorities snapped internet services and closed educational institutions in Handwara as a precautionary measure.
Later, large number of people participated in the last rites of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant Liyaqat Ahmad Lone alias Umar Khalid ¸ Thousands joined the slain militant’s funeral at his native Harwan village in Sopore area . Lone is survived by three children and a wife.
Liyaqat had joined militant ranks on July 8 this year. His sister was to get married today.
Large number of people also attended the funeral of Furqan Ahmad at his native village in Langate area of Handwara. Report said he was a student of 12th standard when he joined militant ranks some four months ago.
Earlier, youth took to streets and clashed with the forces after the news of his death spread in the area.
