Doctor allegedly refuses to treat pregnant woman
Authorities order high level probe
ANANTNAG, Sep 10: Authorities on Monday ordered a high level probe after a video went viral in which a man from Anantnag alleged that the female doctor at maternity hospital in the district refused to treat his wife after he turned down the doctor’s offer to get his wife operated at a private nursing home.

A man identified as Bilal Ahmad Khanday released a video on social media accusing the doctor of denying treatment to his wife last week. The video was widely shared by social media users who too demanded action against the accused doctor. Narrating the sequence of events in a video, Bilal said that his wife ever since her conception remained under the treatment of a gynecologist Dr Shaheena Katoo. As the expected date of delivery (EDD) came closer, he said that the doctor told him that his wife has to undergo Caesarean section which will be done at a private clinic.

“For conducting surgery at a private nursing home, the doctor initially demanded Rs 30,000. I pleaded before her that I am a daily-wage labourer and can't afford such a huge amount following which she agreed on Rs 20, 000,” Bilal alleged in a video.

He said that after fixing Rs 2000, Dr Shaheena told him to admit his wife for surgery on Wednesday. However before he was supposed to admit his wife at a private clinic, Bilal said, his wife developed severe complications leaving him worried and forcing him to take her wife to SDH Seer Hamdan.

“From there I was advised to go to maternity hospital Anantnag. Soon after I reached maternity hospital Dr Shaheena, who was on duty came to the ward and identified both me and my pregnant wife. She did not even touch my wife and just after having a cursory look at my wife told me that her baby has died in the womb,” Khanday alleged.

He said that the lady doctor also refused to treat his wife even after making a false claim of dead baby. “I held her feet and requested her to save my wife, if my baby was dead. She didn’t listen. Instead, she referred my wife to Lal Ded hospital in Srinagar,” Khanday said.

At the LD hospital, Khanday said that the doctors were surprised to know that the doctor at maternity hospital Anantnag had advised surgery and had declared the baby dead. “My wife at LD was taken care of by the doctors and staff very well and had a normal delivery” Khanday said.

He alleged in a video that “Dr Shaheena made false claims about the baby having died in womb because she didn’t get the money we were supposed to pay her at a private nursing home”.

Kashmir Times tried to contact the accused doctor, however her phone was switched off.

Following the video of the man making rounds on social media, authorities ordered a high level probe to look into the allegations.

Chief Medical Officer, Anantnag, Dr Fazil Kochak said that a high level inquiry committee has been constituted by the top authorities to look into the allegations. "The man in the video has also submitted a written complaint making the same accusations. The inquiry team has been asked to furnish the report within three days. We are also separately probing the allegations and will hear the version of the doctor as well during the course of investigation. We cannot implicate the doctor on the basis of video without hearing her," CMO said.
