JAMMU, Sep 8: Two trekkers identified as Naveed Jeelani and Adil Shah were killed and another has been gravely injured after they fell into a crevice of a glacier at Jammu and Kashmir. The incident took place at the Kolohai glacier in Anantnag district, which is located 26 kms from the famous tourist destination Pahalgam on Friday, September 7.
The trekkers fell into the crevasse, when their group consisting of 10 people were returning from Kolahoi Glacier. The 5-kilometre-long Kolahoi Glacier is a valley glacier in the northwestern Himalayan Range and is the main source of Lidder River, which then joins the Jhelum River.
Reports have said that Jeelani used to work in the Jammu and Kashmir Excise as Taxation Officer and Shah was an employee of the Alpine group - a tour and travel group in Jammu and Kashmir. The injured trekker has also been identified as Hazik.
According to report, the district administration immediately asked rescue teams, policemen and local volunteers to rush to the spot and efforts are on to rescue the trekkers.
Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir Baseer Ahmad Khan has also requested an Air Force helicopter through the Civil Aviation Department to aid in the rescue operations. Officials have also sought the army's help to bring out Jeelani and Shah's bodies and lift an injured Hazik out of the crevice.
"Chief Secretary is personally reviewing the rescue operation. Divisional Commissioner Kashmir has asked Air Force to launch rescue early morning," director Disaster Management Aamir Ali told.
The rescue operations will start on Saturday, September 8 morning. Hazik will be airlifted to the hospital for treatment.
