Police arrests 5 youth at Nowhatta
SRINAGAR, Sep 7: Mingled with stone throwers in civvies, police on arrested five youth during clashes that erupted outside historic Jama Masjid at Nowhatta area in old city after Friday congregational prayers.

Official sources while confirming what they termed ‘new strategy’ to curb stone pelting said, cops who had covered their faces with masks joined stone pelters as soon as clashes broke outside Jama Masjid this afternoon.

They said the all the entry and exit points leading to Jama Masjid were blocked while areas adjacent to it were cordoned beforehand by the police.

“This was the part of fresh strategy to curb stone pelting which has become a cause of nuisance for everyone. The operation against stone pelters was carried out under well thought out strategy that worked well,” said a police official.

The official while confirming the arrest of five youth by police said that cops mixed together with youth who often clash with police on every Friday in Nowhatta.

He said laced up with weapon, the masked cops in civvies mingled with the stone pelters before clashes started in the area.

As soon as youth engaged in clashes, masked cops immediately swung into action and bundled five youth into already awaiting police vehicles.

A shopkeeper at Jama Market said he was stunned the moment a masked police cop wearing blue jeans and t-shirt took of the pistol and pointed on his temple and whisked him away.

“This is what I have only seen in Hindi films, I was literally stunned to see the unusual scenario and could not believe my eyes as to what is happening around,” he added.
