SRINAGAR, June 9: Two months after the death of his mother, a sixteen year old teen lost his life while saving a child from drowning into River Jehlum at Aramwari Zero-Bridge here yesterday.
The dead body of Sharik Ahmad Wani, 16, son of Showkat Ahmad Wani of Aramwari Zero-Bridge was fished out near footbridge Rajbagh after sustained efforts.
Sharik, according to witnesses, jumped to save a child of his locality who had accidentally fallen into river Jehlum.
“When he saw a little child falling into the river, he immediately jumped and saved him. However, he could not swim back to the bank being exhausted and hence drowned,” said Fazil, cousin of the deceased teenager.
He said Sharik was a pious boy who was fasting when the incident took place. His death shook the entire locality.
He said that Sharik’s father is in a state of shock and the jolt he received due to the death of his son is unbearable.
“He was a darling to his mother who died two months ago. It would be exactly two months on Monday, the day Sharik’s chaharum will be observed, since the family lost her. It is tragic for the family and the neighbourhood and everyone is mourning the loss. What is left are the stories of Sharik’s valour,” he added.
Fazil said that besides being pious, Sharik was also a brilliant student who passed class 10th examination with good marks.
“He passed 10th class examination with good marks and at present was studying at SP Higher Secondary Institute,” said he.
