Uttrakhand catastrophe

Kashmir Times. Dated: 7/5/2013 12:34:24 AM

Dear Editor,
The natural catastrophe in Uttrakhand, which has led to devastation owing to ill-equipped efforts by the state government, evidently seems to be longest ever episode lingering in media glare. Subsequent to two weeks, the figure of death toll is still unclear which makes the poverty stricken condition of state government conspicuous. Despite umpteen operations (efforts of Army, the Air Force strategy and National Disaster Response Force), the pilgrims have not been rescued. Besides this, the state government has been inefficient in adeptly catering to the suffered. The carcasses of livestock prevail in many water resources which have now been contaminated. But the victims are desperate and compelled to consume the water. The lethargic action of government has led to water-borne diseases for instance cholera, diarrhea and dysentery and 400 people have been admitted in medical camp. With the Rs 336 crores assistance of Rural Development Minister for augmentation of affected parts including bridges and roads, not much is being done. The aid from government for constructing 14000 more IAY abodes doesn’t appear as adequate as it does not affect the lives of the pilgrims.
Besides, the tragedy has given birth to politicking. Especially, for major parties like Congress and BJP the game of dirty digs implies the propaganda for 2014 elections.
The chapter of tragedy has been brushed aside and a new route of dirty politics has emerged where the vote bank politics is made a priority.
