Now that the festival of lights is over, removing the piled up mess left behind is the job still left to be done. But more than that, the mess created high up in the city skies last night was something which everyone noticed. A thick pall of smoke kept hanging and obviously, the Asthma patients and the kids were at the receiving end once again. Apart from the freak accidents taking place at the explosives factories in the country time and again, the health of the residents takes a beating owing to the heavily polluted air, choking the lungs. Despite so many warnings and even the entreaties on the part of the administration and other agencies, most of the people chose to ignore them.
It seems that the ‘noise’ is deeply embedded in our psyches and thus we have this inborn need to go with it at the festivals like Diwali. One wonders what it takes to awaken the masses from the atmospheric catastrophes waiting, if besides, these festivities, vehicular pollution, another factor in the form of industries is later added on. The State hasn’t touched even the tip of the progress, if by that we mean the opening up of the industries generating employment. But perhaps, in that case, the administration might be compelled to look for the pollution-free industries which are quite apt for the State.
