Total shutdown in Kashmir, restrictions in Srinagar parts

SRINGAR, May 19: Complete shutdown amidst stringent restrictions in parts of Srinagar city marked Prime Minister, Narendra Modi’s Kashmir visit today with authorities thwarting the separatists’ proposed ‘Lal Chowk Chalo’ by sealing the venue.
Besides imposing curfew like restriction under section 144 CrPC in parts of Srinagar, authorities either arrested or placed top separatist leaders under house arrest to prevent them from leading protests.
Areas where restrictions remained in place include Safakadal, Nowhatta, Rainawari, M.R Gunj, Khanyar, Maisuma and Kralkhud.
Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising octogenarian separatist leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik had appealed people for Lal Chowk march to protest Modi’s visit to Kashmir.
Authorities, in order to thwart the scheduled march, had placed the city Centre Lal Chowk under thick security cover where as the roads leading towards it were blocked with iron barricades and concertina wire.
Security was beefed-up in Srinagar city with areas around Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC), the venue for the Prime Minister’s function kept under tight security cover.
All the shops, commercial establishments and educational institutions remained closed and traffic off the road; however skeletal movement of private vehicles could be seen on deserted roads.
Government and semi-government offices, banks and courts witnessed thin attendance as most of the employees could not make it to their respective workplaces due to non availability of public transport.
Shops in some old city and uptown areas remained partially open however lack of transport played spoil-sport thus making commuters to suffer immensely.
Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani continued to be under house arrest as he was not allowed by to move out from his Hyderpora residence to take out a protest rally towards Lal Chowk.
Mirwaiz Umer Farooq who heads his faction of Hurriyat Conference (M) along with his dozens of supporters tried to take out a protest rally from his Nigeen residence towards Lal Chowk, however deployed police prevented him from marching ahead. Later, Mirwaiz was detained in the Nigeen police station.
Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Yasin Malik continues to be under detention.
Earlier, several leaders and activists of JKLF were detained by police after they tried to take out a protest rally to Lal Chowk to protest Modi’s visit.
The protesters amid pro freedom slogans when reached Budshah Chowk, contingents of police and CRPF deployed in advance detained and lodged them at nearby police station.
PPP Chairman, Er Hilal Ahmad War was also arrested and lodged at Kothibagh police station after he along with his supporters tried to march Lal Chowk.
Independent MLA Langate and Awami Ittihaad Party (AIP) Chairman, Er Rashid was also arrested along with his scores of supporters from Jawahar Nagar area. He was later lodged in Rajbagh police station.
Pertinently, Rashid had said that he would welcome Modi with black flags and had appealed people to observe the day as black day.
Hi-speed mobile internet service including 3G and 4G was snapped midnight at around 12.00 AM. However, 2G service was restored next day in Srinagar.
