Clashes erupt during search operation

ANANTNAG, May 16: A brief gunfight erupted between security forces and militants after the former were laying a siege in Jamnagri area of Shopian district on Wednesday.
Official and local sources said that following an input about the presence of militants in the orchards of the area, the forces laid a siege around the orchards. As the siege was being laid, sources said, the militants hiding in the orchards and believed to be three in number, opened heavy fire on the forces. The fire was retaliated triggering a brief exchange of fire between the two sides.
"The gunshots continued for at least five minutes but we cannot say whether it were the warning shots by the army or firing from both sides," said a local.
The forces, local sources said, launched major searches operations in the area to nab the militants. However, as soon as the searches were launched, locals mostly youth hit the streets and clashed with the forces to disrupt the operation.
The clashes continued for some time during which three persons sustained minor injuries. Local sources said that amid clashes, the forces carried out the searches but failed to locate the militants.
