SRINAGAR, July 2: Markundal killings continued to dominate the political scene in Kashmir today.
Hurriyat Conference (M) during its executive council meeting here discussed the issue. It alleged that after the visit of prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, a “new phase of targeting of people by security forces has begun.” The Hurriyat (M) leaders viewed that the situation would take a “serious turn if this fresh trend of suppression was not put to an end.”
The meeting was presided over by chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. During the meeting the speakers asked the Indian leadership and human rights activists as to why they observed a criminal silence over the issue while they have been strongly raising their voice if such incident occurs in any part of India.
The Hurriyat (M) leaders viewed that Kashmir issue can neither be solved militarily nor through political supremacy. “The pro-India parties and the state government cannot exonerate themselves from these killings and cannot mislead the people by shedding crocodile tears,” they said.
The speakers said t Hurriyat (M) wants an analysis of bitter political facts and move forward with a positive mind so that result oriented efforts are started by India, Pakistan and Kashmir resistance leadership for solution of Kashmir issue.
The Hurriyat leaders also decided to send letters to Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC), United Nations Human Rights Commission and other international organisations to attract their attention towards the “deteriorating human rights situation in Kashmir.”
Senior National Conference (NC) leader Dr. Mustafa Kamaal said the apology of army for Markundal incident will not do. “Such apologies cannot heal the wounds of Kashmiri people,” he added.
Addressing the party workers in Baramulla, the NC leader said it is not army only which is repeatedly committing mistakes in Kashmir but the government of India is itself committing mistakes in the state. The beginning was made on August 9, 1953 when the government of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah was toppled and he was arrested. “When in 1977 center was asked to keep its promise on autonomy to Kashmir, it again toppled the government of Sheikh sahab and sabotaged the demand. This was repeated in 1984, 1987 and 1990 with Jagmohan as governor,” he said.
Kamaal alleged that whenever New Delhi was asked to keep its promise, it made lame excuses. “After 2009 and 2010 violent conditions, the center set up some working groups. When the groups submitted their recommendations those were consigned to dustbins by Delhi. The recommendations of central interlocutors also met the same fate. The interlocutors had made some recommendations on AFSPA, return of power projects and restoration of autonomy.
Kamaal said it took 22 years for central government to apologise for Kunan Poshpora incident. “Its apology was like rubbing salt to the injuries to people since the guilty army men are moving freely,” he said.
The NC leader also criticized PDP for what he called for their double standards.
