Govt accommodations to former Presidents, VPs, PM, CM not fair

Dear Editor

Union government had once rightly banned converting government-bungalows into memorials and developing any more ‘samadhis’ in New Delhi which otherwise had become a common trend in capital city of Delhi. But it is also a wrong practice for providing spacious big government-bungalows to former Presidents, Vice presidents and Prime Ministers for life-time, and which continues even for their spouses for their entire life in case of death of the incumbent.

Many state-government have also made rules to provide similar post-retirement ‘palaces’ for former Chief Ministers even though he/she might have been a Chief Minister for a couple of days. Several Chief Ministers have even misused government-funds during their regime as they have spent enormous public-money for building post-retirement palace for themselves. All of this is criminal waste of public-resources and needs to be stopped. If no such system exists for retired heads in judiciary and bureaucracy, it is highly unfair to extend such a princely facility to those having held high postings in legislature. Former Chief Justice of India JS Verma resided in a rented accommodation after retirement because honesty he could not build a post-retirement bungalow for himself.

Moreover unauthorized occupation of government-bungalow at 6 Krishna Menon Marg (New Delhi) in memory for Babu Jagjiwanram is also a blunt misuse of power by concerned ones with Union government having closed its eyes on the issue. Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee misused his position as caretaker Prime Minister by getting number of his post-retirement bungalow from 8 to 6-A Krishna Menon Marg (New Delhi) and changed just for superstitious reasons against all rules and norms.

India should follow US example where every retired President gets half of last paid salary as only post-retirement benefit from the government without any government-bungalow, staff or other privileges at government-expense.
