Militants open fire in Shopian, SPO, civilian injured

ANANTNAG, Apr 16: A special police officer (SPO) and a civilian were injured after the suspected militants opened fire in Bongam area of southern Shopian town on Monday.
Official and local sources said that the militants opened fire on an SPO while he was riding on a two wheeler at around 4:30 pm. In the firing incident, they said, a pedestrian also suffered injuries after being hit by a bullet. The injured SPO was identified as Bilal Ahmad of Zainpora while as the civilian was identified as Rafiq Ahmad Lone of Vehil Shopian.
Both the injured, local sources said, were evacuated to district hospital Shopian where from both of them were referred to Srinagar hospital on the basis of severity of their injuries.
The injured SPO was posted at district police lines and was earlier the personal security guard of local NC leader Shabir Ahmad Kullay.
Soon after the attack by the militants, government forces rushed to the area and launched major searches to nab the attackers.
A police officer posted in the district said that a case has been registered into the incident and investigations have been initiated. "We have also launched to a major hunt to locate the attackers but we are yet to establish with which outfit the militants who carried out the attack belonged to," the police officer said.
However the statement issued by the police with regard to the incident said that the militants of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen outfit carried carried out the attack. "The preliminary investigation reveals the involvement of outlawed Hizb outfit into the attack," the police statement said.
