Protests against Kathua rape, murder case
MAJID NABI
SRINAGAR, April 14: Protests against rape and murder of minor nomad girl Asifa Banoo in Jammu’s Kathua in January this year rocked Kashmir valley on second consecutive day today.

Protests that sparked in parts of Srinagar city this morning ended up with the demand of capital punishment to the accused.

From traders to civil society members, everyone in one voice demanded justice for the rape and murder victim Asifa.

Members of Federation of Chambers of Industries Kashmir (FCIK) staged protest at Press Enclave here seeking strenuous punishment to the all accused involved in heinous crime.

Shouting slogans against right wing BJP’s constituent Hindu Ekta Manch, the protesting traders said that the ghastly act with a minor child rattled the entire humanity.

The protesting traders claimed that Muslim community has been a soft target of communal forces ever since BJP took over reins of power in centre.

“All the industrial estates from the length and breadth of Kashmir have joined this protest in collaboration with Jammu and Kashmir Coordination Committee have gathered here to support Asifa’s case,” said prominent civil society activist, Shakeel Qalander.

Qalander demanded that the case must be shifted from Kathua to some other court so that the trail will be conducted in free and fair manner.

“We think justice cannot be done at Kathua court, the judge was reluctant to accept the charge sheet for four hours who should be prosecuted for accepting the charge sheet. Those who prevented police from filing charge sheet should also be taken to task,” he added.

Condemning the dastardly act with an innocent girl, he appealed people of both the provinces to stand up against the rape and murder of Asifa so that the guilty will be awarded with death penalty.

Lal Chowk Traders Federation also staged demonstrations to protest what they termed inhuman act by men in uniform.

Members who had assembled at Press Enclave demanded death penalty to the rapists of Asifa and stern action against Kathua lawyers who prevented police to file charge sheet in the court.

“We demand capital punishment for the guilty and stern action against those who support them. Our objective to assemble here was to express sympathy with victim family,” said traders President.

The protesters amid anti BJP and Chowhdry Lal Singh slogans marched towards Ghanta Ghar from Press Enclave to register their protest.

Activists of Kashmir RTI Movement (KRTIM) and Gujjar Bakerwal community members also held protest against Asifa’s rapists.

While KRTIM activists gathered at Press Enclave, members of Gujjar and Bakerwal community held protest at Tengpora Bypass here.

“Guilty should not be spared and justice must be done with the victim, if there would be any delay on part of the government to take Asifa’s case to end we will intensify our protest and block roads,” said the protesters.
