Don’t try to make Kathua case look like Hindu vs Muslim issue: Omar

JAMMU, Apr 14: Former J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah hit out on a section of people on Saturday for attempting to communalise the rape and brutal murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua.
‘If some of you want to defend the rape of a minor girl and can live with yourselves after that be my guest, but please don’t try to make it look like a Hindu vs Muslims issue,’ he said.
Omar Abdullah, who is the working president of National Conference (NC), said that a handful of bigoted men misusing a place of worship with the express aim of driving Muslims out from the area, is not a reflection of the people of Jammu and their commitment to the secular character of J&K.
“Kathua is about the rape and murder of an eight year old child & the need to see justice done in this case. The rest of the noise is just an attempt at obfuscation,” he wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.
“So if some of you want to defend the rape of a minor girl and can live with yourselves after that, be my guest but please don’t try to make it look like a Hindus of Jammu v/s Muslims issue,” he said.
He said the people of Jammu are no more guilty of this crime than the people of Delhi for the rape of Nirbhaya in 2012.
“Some people are determined to sell the binary that demanding justice for the victim of the Kathua travesty is akin to calling every Hindu of Jammu a rape sympathiser,” Omar Abdullah added.
