KT NEWS SERVICE
SRINAGAR, June 1: The Army today said it is not involved in the first killing of a youth that took place in the Markandal-Sumbal village in the wee hours of Sunday while in the second incident the troops fired in self defence.

“Based on specific intelligence about the presence of militants 13 RR Army along with SOG at 3.15 am Sunday went to Markundal area. When Army and SOG reached there, a fire was heard and then we saw we found a youth was lying on the ground. I cannot say who did it but I must say that Army is not involved at all in the killing of Irfan Ahmad Ganie,” said Brigadier 3 sector RR Brij Gopal told reporters. “I checked all the ammunition of my troops who were on the operation but nothing of it was used by any of our trooper he said. As far as the second incident is concerned when the Operation was called off, the Army troopers began to pull out of the area. The people caught the ambulance which usually remains with the troopers at the time of some operation,” he has said.

“The ambulance bearing registration No 02K007 2154 was attacked by violent mob and they try to set the ambulance on fire and assault the doctor and driver. The troops fired in self defence resulting in injuries to the youth, who later succumbed to injuries for which we express sympathies with the bereaved families. We deeply feel sad,” he said.

Meanwhile, Commanding officer of 13 RR Sanjay Kejwal has said that army was not at all involved in the first incident which took place in the area. “However SoG was accompanying us but as far as second incident is concerned it is unfortunate and we regret it.”

Pertinently General Officer Commanding Victor Force, Major General R R Nimbhorkar on Sunday had said that Army has initiated inquiry into the killings. The State Government has already registered FIR in Sumbal Police Station against those responsible for the killing of civilians.
