3 ‘extortionists’ including a cop booked

SRINAGAR, Apr 7: Police have arrested three armed ‘extortionists’ including a cop for demanding money from people in Kulgam district.
Reports said the trio used to present themselves as militants to demand money from the local people.
A police official said a complaint was registered by one Ahmadullah Bhat of Nandimarg at Damhal Hanjipora police station stating that a couple of unknown gunmen barged into his house on March 30 last month and demanded money from him.
“The complainant handed over four signed cheques to them on gun point.”
During the course of investigation, police learnt that most of the cheques have been en-cashed at different branches of Jammu Kashmir Bank in Kulgam district. After putting strenuous efforts, police found that one suspect Shafeeq Ganie of Bozgam had received one cheque amounting to Rs 50,000 from Bilal Ahmed Dar of Ganjipora village while the amount in question was transferred into his account.
On the basis of interrogation he revealed that a policeman working in IRP Battalion as constable whom he identified as Parviaz Ahmed Bhat of Paniwah village and another man Nazir Ahmed Dar of Yarikha hamlet are kingpin of the gang.
During investigation it was learnt that an amount of Rs 1,70,000 was en-cashed by the accused persons out of which Rs. 1,20,000 cash has been recovered from their possession.
SSP Kulgam, Sridhar Patil told media that three accused have been arrested and investigation under vide FIR number 22/18 under section 384, 385 RPC, 7/25 Arms Act is going on.
