Anantnag shuts to remember 3 youth killed in 2010
SRINAGAR, June 29: Amid heavy deployment of forces, a complete shutdown was observed in Anantnag township on the death anniversary of three youth, killed three years back.

The youth Shujat-ul-Islam, Imtiyaz Ahmad Sofi and Ishtiyaq Ahmad Sofi were allegedly killed by the police men while they were chasing the stone pelting youth in SK colony area of the township. The killing of the trio had triggered violent protests in the town. The state government ordered magisterial inquiry into the killings. The inquiry team termed the killings as a cold-blooded murder and recommended action against many police men including some officers.

On the third death anniversary of the trio, a complete shutdown was observed in Anantnag today. All the shops, commercial establishments, private offices and private educational institutions remained closed in all the markets of the town while the transport, both public and private plied normally on the roads. Though no separatist organization or families of the deceased had called for shutdown but the posters had appeared on the walls and electric polls last evening appealing the people to observe strike on Saturday as a tribute to the three youth.

Meanwhile People’s League, chairman and Hurriyat (M) leader visited the families of the deceased along with his supporters and expressed sympathy with them.

Pertinently the town has been observing shutdown on the anniversaries of the trio every year for the last three years.
