Shutdown against arrests in Shopian

SRINAGAR, Feb 8: A shutdown was today observed in Shopian against the arrests of two youth last night.
Clashes occurred between protestors and security forces at Batapora area. The protesters pelted stones and the cops burst smoke shells and fired pellets. A youth was allegedly hit by pellets and was hospitalised.
Police alleged that the two arrested youth are stone-pelters.
Because of the shutdown, shops and other business establishments remained closed in Shopian. Transport was mostly off the roads.
Heavy deployment of police and paramilitary forces was made as a precautionary measure.
