Shutdown in Shopian enters 11th day

SRINAGAR, Feb 3: Normal life was affected for the 11th consecutive day today in Shopian due to a shutdown against civilian killings.
Four civilian were killed in security forces firing on protestors in two different incidents at Chaigund and Ganowpora areas. A teenaged boy was killed in firing by security forces firing near an encounter site at Chaigund, where two militants were also killed.
Three civilians were killed in army firing on protestors at Ganowpora. Police has registered a murder case against army. The state government has also ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. Army has claimed that they opened fire after their vehicles were attacked with stones and a mob tried to lynch its officer. However, the charge was refuted by the villagers
A minor boy who was injured in an explosion of an unexploded shell after the Chaigund encounter succumbed to his injuries in hospital a few days back.
Because of the shutdown, shops and other business establishments remained closed in Shopian. Government offices also remained closed or register thin attendance of employees. Public transport is off the roads.
Meanwhile, the authorities today restored 2 G internet service in Shopian and Pulwama districts after 10 days. The services were snapped immediately after Chaigund encounter had started.
However, the 3 G and 4 G internet services continued to remain suspended today also and authorities said the services will remain suspended till further orders.
