IED defused, 2 injured in Shalteng firing

SRINAGAR, Jan 13: Hours after police defused an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along Srinagar-Baramulla National Highway; two persons were reportedly injured in the army firing in Shalteng area on city outskirts this evening.
Two persons sustained bullet injuries after the army opened fire at Shalteng area following inputs about the movement of militants.
Army claimed that its personnel on routine deployment directed a suspicious vehicle to stop near HMT; however the driver of the vehicle did not respond and ran away prompting army to open fire.
They said two persons were injured in the incident. Amongst them, one was identified as Abdul Aziz Laway of Parimpora while the identity of the other injured could not be ascertained.
Both the injured have been removed to SKIMS Medical College Bemina and their condition is said to be stable. Police has registered a case in this regard and investigations started.
Earlier Special Bomb Defusal Squad of police defused seven kilogram Improvised Explosive Device (IED) near planted along Srinagar-Baramulla highway near HMT.
Sources said that police on specific information about IED immediately rushed to the spot and defused the explosive, after hours of hard work, at 11 A.M.
They claimed that the IED was planted by militants with intensions to cause heavy damage ahead of Republic day.
A senior police official said that a routine patrol party of 44 Battalion Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) recovered the IED on the highway at around 4 am in the morning.
Meanwhile, traffic movement on the highway was suspended and the entire area was cordoned by government forces. Traffic was resumed hours after the Bomb Disposal Squad defused the explosive.
