Protest against striking doctors in SKIMS

SRINAGAR, Jan 12: Protests rocked Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura here Friday after a group of attendants staged demonstrations against doctor’s unwarranted strike.

Shouting slogans against Resident Doctors who have been on strike against the attachment of Dr A G Ahangar, the protesting attendants assembled outside Administrative Unit of the hospital and held protest against ‘unjustified’ strike.

They said neither do the doctors attend on patients, nor discharge them “we have been left at the mercy of Allah. Our patients have been left unattended ever since the doctors went on strike.”

The protesters accused the SKIMS authorities for taking poor patients and their attendants for a ride.

“Why should we suffer if the government attached hospital head, patients with critical ailments have been left unattended. My brothers open heart surgery was scheduled on Tuesday however the strike called by doctors delayed the same thus putting his life at risk,’ said an attendant from Singhpora Pattan.

He said that the doctors asked him to get equipment requisite for conducting surgery from the market; however his surgery could not be performed till date.

“I got equipment worth 2.5 lakh rupees from open market; however the surgery was not performed till date. My patient is empty stomach and is at the verge of death but the doctors here do whatever they deem fit for them,’’ he added.

Another attendant from Mirchipora Tangmarg said doctors for their petty interests have left patients and their attendants in helpless situation in the wake of strike call.

“My brother is battling with life as he do undergo a major surgery for tumor but the doctors here seems less bothered about patients and concerned about their personal interests only,” he said.

The protesting attendants demanded immediate discharge of those patients who had to undergo surgery. “We want our patients to be discharged so that they can be treated in other hospitals, for God’s sake resolve our issue as we cannot see our dear ones dying with pain.
