SRINAGAR, July 14:Hundreds of students studying at SKIMS Medical College, Bemina are aghast over the alleged gross violation of Medical Council of India (MCI) norms, especially with regard to the provision of basic infrastructure mandatory for any medical college.
The students at SKIMS Medical College rue that they have to travel a distance of 24 kilometers all the way to SKIMS, Soura for undertaking practical classes in surgery and medicine subjects.
The MCI guidelines prescribe that any approved medical college should have its associated teaching hospital within an ambit of five kilometers of the campus.
Any medical college according to MCI norms has to have a Principal/Dean’s office, staff room, office superintendent’s room, Office record room, examination hall, and separate common room for male and female students with cafeteria.
The SKIMS Medical College, Bemina stands sans staff room, college council room, record room and an examination hall.
The provision of audio visual aided lecture theaters has also been laid down as necessary by MCI guidelines with built in over-head projector, slide projector and a microphone., clearly nowhere to be found in the medical college.
The accommodation of the lecture halls is also not as per the MCI norms with the current seating capacity restricted to just 50 , though it should lie within the rage of 60- 125.
“Over the years, the authorities have not even thought of increasing the bed capacity of the associated hospital which stands at 250 right now. For any associated hospital of a medical college with an intake capacity of 50, a 400 bedded hospital is a must have. The same is not the case with SKIMS, Bemina College,” an MBBS student wishing anonymity told KT.
There are no facilities for studio, dark room, microphotography and mounting as per the student accounts.
Director SKIMS, Soura, Dr. Showkat Zargar who is also the in-charge principal of SKIMS, Medical College, Bemina when contacted said the proposal for setting up an independent medical college in Bemina and an associated medical college with SKIMS, Soura is on the cards which would be realised in two years from now.
“We are also at asking for more funds from the centre with respect to an increase in the capacity of the SKIMS Medical College from 50 to 100 and also up gradation of infrastructure,” he added.
