Army man, 'militant' killed in Pampore encounter

SRINAGAR, Nov 2: An army man was killed during an encounter that broke out today between militants and security forces in Pulwama district of south Kashmir, police said.
A soldier has been killed, said Director General of Police S P Vaid. He, however, refused to give further details, saying the encounter was continuing.
Security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in Samboora village of Pampore area this evening following information about the presence of some militants there, officials said.
As the security forces were conducting searches, the militants opened fire, they said, adding that a gun-battle ensued as the forces retaliated.
A body, believed to be that of a militant, could be seen lying on the ground from a distance, the officials said, adding that the identity of the person would be established once the security forces are able to take its custody.
Security forces including army and Special Operations Group (SOG) of police on a specific input about the presence of militants laid a siege to the Samboora village of Pulwama at around 6.30 PM.
The forces, they said, zeroed in on a particular cluster of houses where they had information about presence of militants. As soon as the house was zeroed in, local sources said, the militants hiding there threw grenades towards the forces and resorted to heavy firing on them. The fire was retaliated triggering an encounter. The heavy exchange of fire was on till this report was being filed. "Heavy exchange of fire is on. We are hearing the gun shots and sounds of mortar shells fired by the security forces towards the house the militants are holed up," a local said.
As soon as the encounter raged, scores of youth of the area took to streets and clashed with security forces by hurling stones on them. In order to drive away the youth, security forces fired tear-smoke shells and pellets. Amid intense gunfight clashes were going on till this report was being filed.
Meanwhile, internet services were suspended in Pulwama district.
An official said that 4G/3G/2G services were suspended in the district “as a precautionary measure”.
