SRINAGAR Oct 20: Restrictions were imposed on the movement of people and vehicles in different areas of Srinagar city falling under the jurisdiction of seven police stations today.
Officials said the restrictions were imposed in view of a call by separatists for protests after Friday prayers against the increasing braid chopping incidents in Kashmir. Restrictions were imposed in Khanyar, Rainawari, Nowhatta, M.R.Gunj, Safa Kadal, Maisuma and Kralkhud areas.
Normal life was paralysed in the affected areas due to restrictions. Shops and other business establishments remained closed. Transport was also off the roads.
Heavy deployment of police and security forces were deployed to enforce the restrictions. They had sealed the roads and lanes and not allowing the people and vehicles to move.
Because of the restrictions no congregational Friday prayers were held in Jamia Masjid here. All entry and exit points were sealed. Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who delivers Friday sermon and addresses people there, was placed under house arrest. However, Mirwaiz was scheduled to offer the Friday prayer at the shrine at Charar-e-Sharief today.
Protest demonstrations were held at several places against the braid chopping. Hurriyat Conference (G) supporters and activists held protest at Hyderpora after Friday prayers.
A similar protest was held at Saraibal by activists of JKLF. They later staged a protest sit in at Amirakadal.
Life in rest of Kashmir remained normal. Shops and other business establishments, government offices and educational institutions functioned normally, while transport plied on roads.
