SRINAGAR, Oct 12: Kashmir Center for Social and Developmental Studies (KCSDS), a civil society group, Thursday held a peaceful demonstration here against braid chopping incidents, demanding government to identify elements who have unleashed a reign of terror in the society.
Protesting members also criticized the government for placing KCSDS Convener; Professor Hameeda Nayeem under house detention saying such moves makes government suspicious before people.
“We have gathered here to protest growing incidents of braid chopping which have given sleepless nights to the people. We have also taken a pledge to protect our mothers, sisters and daughters who have been at the target of braid choppers,” said Shakeel Qalander who leads the protest at Press Enclave here this evening.
Qalander said braid chopping incidents have created panic among women of Kashmir whose honour and dignity has been at stake.
“Had government been really sincere to crack the issue, our Convener would not have been detained at her house since morning. They announced closure of schools to prevent students from holding protests. This all indicates that government is behind all this,” Qalander added.
“We would like to take pledge today that we are with our mothers and sisters. Even if the government fails to nab the culprit we will put our lives at risk but won’t allow anyone to harass them,” he added.
He alleged that it’s the handiwork of government and agencies to create an atmosphere of fear in the society so that the attention of people towards other sensitive issues is diverted.
“How could they relate the incidents of hair cutting with hysteria, government should wake up from slumbers and try to know as to how many women’s have become target of braid choppers since past one and half months. Does the government want to give a notion that all hundred and fifty victims are mad?, questioned he.
He said government instead of providing relief to the victims and their families by arresting culprits have been accusing them of being mentally unsound.
