Jawan, porter killed, 6 injured in firing on LoC

MENDHAR, Oct 12: With no let up in ceasefire violations along the borders, an Army jawan and a porter were killed and six others injured when Pakistani troops opened firing targeting the forward areas along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district, today.

Official reports said that the Pakistani troops opened unprovoked firing upon two Indian forward Posts Sarla and Summi in Gulpur area when the jawans were carrying out some work near the posts. They started firing using small arms at 10.45 AM and continued till 1.30 PM. An army jawan and a porter lost their lives in the firing while six jawans were injured.

The deceased jawan has been identified as Sepoy T K Reddy (Belt Number 4505968-H), 21, posted with 898 AT Battalion of Andhra Pradesh's Prakasam district and Defence Porter Mohammad Zahir (22) of Manjakote (Token Number 1112).

The injured jawans were identified as Sepoy Kedar Gouri Shanker (15 MLI), 34, of Solapur, Maharashtra, Sepoy Nare, 25, (15 MLI), Naik Roop Nar Baba Sheb Janku, 35, of Admednagar, Maharashtra, Naik R Munthu Pondi (898 AT Battalion), 44, of Tamil Naidu, Sepoy Narinder Kumar (898 AT Battalion), of Chattisgarh and Porter Mohammad Isaq son of Jamal-u-Din of Kurhed district Rajouri (Token number 874).

The Indian troops retaliatedusing equal caliber and exchange of firing continued till 1.30 PM.

However, intelligence sources said that the jawans and porters were targeted using an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and not in the ceasefire violation which was not confirmed by the defence authorities.

Defence spokesperson here said that the Pakistan Army initiated unprovoked and indiscriminate firing of small arms and automatics from 1035 hours in Krishnagati sector along the Line of Control (LoC).

The Indian Army retaliated strongly and effectively. The exchange of fire is on, he said.

During firing, Sepoy T K Reddy and Defence Porter Mohammad Zahir suffered serious injuries and died later, the spokesperson said.

He said six other personnel, including a defence porter, were also injured and all of them are undergoing treatment.

Reddy belonged to Obulapuram village in Andhra Pradesh's Prakasam district. He is survived by his mother.

Zahir belonged to Kalali village in Manjakote area of Rajouri district, he said.

Defence spokesperson added that Sepoy Reddy was a brave and sincere soldier and Zahir was an honest and dedicated worker, he said adding that the nation will always remain indebted to them for their supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty.

On October 6, Pakistani troops had opened fire on Baba Khori and other areas in Rajouri district, and on October 4, three Army jawans were injured in unprovoked and indiscriminate firing in the Poonch sector.

An Army jawan was killed in a ceasefire violation by Pakistan along the LoC in Poonch on October 3.

On October 2, two minors had died and 12 civilians were injured in cross-border shelling.

The year 2017 has seen a sharp increase in ceasefire violations by Pakistan.
