SRINAGAR, Sep 22: The indefinite strike by Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union (AWHU) against alleged government apathy entered into fifth day today with authorities seemingly unconcerned over their plight.
Haseena Sofi, spearheading the ongoing strike, alleged that the authorities with aim to muzzle their voice did not allow them to address a media conference at Food and Supplies office here.
She accused the government of using every tactic to suppress female Anganwadi workers and helpers so that the issues confronting them were not highlighted.
“We have pledged to continue our strike till the government resolves our genuine demands, we will not budge an inch even if the government uses bullets and pellets against us,” added Haseena.
She termed the force used by the government as its frustration to conceal injustice meted out to them on one pretext or another.
The protesting females, who have been on indefinite strike at Press Enclave, said either government would have to resolve their issues or the people sitting at the helm of affairs should be ready for confrontation.
“Our only demand is to increase our monthly salary from existing 3600 to 10,000 while salary of helpers is increased from 1800 to 6000. We want the government to treat us at par with the employees of social welfare department of other states,” she said.
The protesters appealed Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to personally intervene in the matter so that standoff between government and Anganwadi workers and helpers could come to an end.
“We have been exploited by the government from time to time, whenever there are elections we are at the forefront. We discharge election duties with sincerity without caring our lives but the government’s step motherly treatment not only disappointed us but made us agitated as well,” said Shaista a protesting worker.
